2013 Championship - Report

As with so many other tournaments, it was round 1 that kicked off the 2013 BUCA Team Championship. While most teams arrived in time for the midday start, allowances had been made for defending champions Edinburgh and the other most northerly teams, including newest recruits Newcastle.

It must be said however, that round 1 was not one for the underdogs with the top seeds dropping only a point and a half out of a possible thirty-two. The real surprise was Southampton 2’s Luke Whatmough drawing with a much higher-graded opponent from York in a scrappy Budapest Gambit.

Round 2 was a little more closely matched with even Edinburgh drawing against Bristol’s first team, a blow from which they never seemed to fully recover. Credit must go to Rob Thompson for his king and queen versus king and rook endgame that he won on increment alone. By now there were only four teams on maximum points with LSE leading the pack with maximum game points.

With the tournament well-under way, but minds starting to feel the strain, round 3 saw Warwick 1 and Imperial take joint lead on match and game points. Slightly lower down the pairings, and no doubt tired from their unexpected draw with Edinburgh, Bristol 1 then committed a BUCA faux pas by drawing against their own second team, thus cancelling out any title ambitions of their own. Curiously, despite plenty of universities entering multiple teams over the past few years, this was only the second time a university has faced itself and presumably the first where the stronger team didn’t win! (Go Bristol 2!)

Students being what they are, Saturday night at BUCA is typically something to behold and although I shan’t be divulging any of the particulars, suffice it to say that there were many bleary eyes at the excellent buffet breakfast in the morning. Dragging their sorry selves to the AGM, a few issues were discussed but all seemed happily resolved and my Palpatine-esque rise to power continues as I took control of the Publicity Officer post. (Speaking of which, if you tweet, you should be following the wise, witty and wonderful words of @bucachess.)

In spite of, or perhaps because of, the tired eyes and aching heads, there were only 5 draws in round 4, leaving Imperial and Warwick 1 ahead by one match point and level on game points, with Durham, Edinburgh and Bristol 1 chasing. Round 5 saw Warwick see off defending champions Edinburgh 2½-1½ but with Imperial beating Bristol 3-1 they managed to squeak to victory by half a game point!

After another fantastic weekend, expertly organized and run, it is safe to say that BUCA is still going from strength to strength. We look forward to seeing you next year!

Several universities have also provided blogs of the event, which offer a more casual insight into the event, so check them out!

2012 World Memory Championships

The World Memory Championships 2012 are being held from Friday 14th December to Sunday 16th December, with a preparation day on Thursday 13th December at:

Additional volunteer arbiters are badly needed so BUCA members are encouraged to help out.

Here is the full request from David Sedgwick:

Ray Keene recruited me when the Championships were last held in England in 2009. I emerged with a Level 1 Arbiter Certificate (that being the lowest level, of course) and hence I now have an arbiting qualification in three different Mind Sports, the others being Chess and Bridge. The 2010 and 2011 events were both held in China, so I wasn’t involved.

Although much of the work might appear mundane – a fair amount of it is akin to marking exam scripts and there is a lot of card shuffling – I nevertheless found it interesting and rewarding. I had no hesitation in volunteering when I knew the Championships were returning to London this year, even though the small honorarium I received in 2009 is not available this time. Unfortunately there is little or no sponsorship this year, so I do mean volunteers.

The present position is that, although there are arbiters coming from Algeria, Australia, China, Denmark, France and Germany, the team is nevertheless likely to be a bit stretched. An extra four or five people would make all the difference.

Although students of any discipline would be very welcome, modern linguists would be especially so. There is one round in which the competitors have to remember words and they are allowed to do this in their own language.

Anyone who is interested, or would like more information, should contact Phil Chambers, Chief Arbiter, at phil@worldmemorychampionships.com. Ray Keene has pointed out that it would be a useful item to include on a CV.

2010 World Universities' Championship - Team

The British Universities’ Chess Association has assembled a British team to play in the World Universities’ Chess Championship in Zurich from September 4 to September 12:

FM Peter Poobalasingam (Bath)

Vedantha Kumar (Cambridge)

WFM Sarah Hegarty (Bristol)

Hannah Dale (Exeter)

Team Manager: IM Lorin d’Costa

They will be competing in both an individual and team competition. The team competition is determined by:

a) The highest-scoring male player

b) The highest-scoring female player

c) The next highest score from a male or female player in either competition.

The next opportunity to play for a British team will be the 2011 World Student Games, in Shenzhen, China, in August 2011. To guarantee your place in the team, you must be the highest scoring male or female player at the 2010 BUCA Individual Championship, which will be held in Blackpool. The leading non-qualified player can qualify for free entry to the 2011 British Championship, held in Sheffield at the end of July and early August.

4NCL Rapidplay Championships

The 4NCL will be holding its first team and individual rapidplay championships on 9-10 October 2010 for which entries are invited from all interested teams and players. The team championship held on the Saturday and the individual championship on the Sunday. Winners will hold the title of 4NCL Team and Individual Rapidplay Champion respectively for 2010/2011. The 4NCL are guaranteeing a prize fund of at least £2,000 for the weekend.

Hopefully both the format (significantly different from the previous 4NCL rapidplay events last held in 2008), the time control (10 minutes + 5 second increment per game) and the time of year (a month before the start of the new 4NCL season) will prove attractive.

Although it would of course be unrealistic to expect entry fees to be paid in advance of the deadlines (30 September, or 30 June for discounted entry fees), Mike Truran of 4NCL would very much appreciate it if you could let him know whether you expect to enter. That will help him give the venue an idea of likely numbers in advance.

Full details of this event here.

- Ensure Great Britain is appropriately represented at any official functions to which it is invited, including Opening & Closing ceremonies.

2010 World Universities' Championship

The 2010 World Universities’ Chess Championship will be played between September 4-12 in Zurich, Switzerland. BUCA, in liaison with British Universities’ College & Sport will be responsible for organising a team of up to 8 players, in which no more than 5 can be of the same gender, can attend the event.

Players must be a member of a British Federation (i.e. England, Scotland, Wales). It is not sufficient to just be a British citizen.

Players must be a member of a society which is a member of BUCA. If your society is not a member, then follow the instructions on that page for them to become one. If your University does not have a society, why not set one up? Get in touch with your Student Guild/Union, and you can set one up. Even if you’re the only member of a fledgling society, you are able to be selected for this event.

Players must be under the age of 28. This rule is imposed by the WUCC organisers.

There will probably be some sort of funding available for this event, although the precise details are yet to be finalised.

Please e-mail Alex Holowczak if you are interested in playing in this event.

Aston vs Birmingham

The University of Birmingham beat Aston University 11½ – 4½ in a two-match friendly on Thursday 4th February and Wednesday 10th February 2010.

The first match saw Aston travel to Birmingham. The top 4 boards were keenly contested. Notable games included the game on board 2, where Don Kumarapathirage sacrificed a piece for a promising attack, but it soon faltered. Alex Holowczak and Alan Islas drew in a tight time-scramble, where Alan had superior winning chances. Fiachura Knox won his game after superb positional play broke down his more experienced opponent.

Despite a sudden snow storm in Birmingham just an hour before the match, Birmingham travelled to Aston for a return match a week later. Aston’s lower boards performed better and the match was poised at 4-3 to Birmingham with the final game still being played. Trying to win to save the match Alex Holowczak lost, and Birmingham won the match 5-3, and also won the series by 7 points.
